Extract Icons From EXE, DLL, OCX, CPL and CIL files With Free Icon Tool

While we have mostly focused on customizing Windows and improving Windows Performance this time I would introduce you to hack around and extract icons from exe and dll files. Don’t get excited those files are packed with compilers you nothing could be done to actually alter their information. But we can extract resources like icons and cursors  present inside them. They houses their own icon or icons for other parts of the application. In any case if you need to extract icon from exe file, only way get is to hack around with tool like Free Icon Tool.

Free Icons Tool is an freeware software to extract icons from EXE, DLL, OCX, CPL and CIL files. It provides very easy to use interface to explore exe files without much complicated terms and settings. For long time I did used Resource Hacker which I think an excellent utility to peak inside .dll and .exe files. But on downside Resource Hacker is its very complicated for novice and no way compares with Free Icons Tool in term of look and feel. Free Icons Tool is build with novice users in mind.

Download Free Icon Tool (1.8 MB). Installation is straight forward. Installer Offers to install third party components (RelevantKnowledge) which is not necessarily required and you can skip it during installation.

Start the application after installation. It is one screen interface.

Open the file from which you want to extract icons. Free Icon Tool support EXE, DLL, OCX, CPL and CIL files. Use Open Files button to specify file. All the icons from the file will be displayed like above screenshot. We have selected Internet Explorer file which shows Internet Explorer icons. Select the icons which to be exported and click Export button to save.

You can also extract default Windows icons for shell.dll file. File is stored in system32 folder under Windows. Possibility to use Free Icon Tool is limitless, and you can make custom icon collection from your favorite applications or extract icons from different skin packs making one masterpiece.
